When buyers request webbing quotations, the most common mistake is specifying only a colour and a length. Width, thickness, yarn type, weave density and tensile strength all determine whether a tape will perform properly in the finished product. This guide explains the main specification points and how to describe them clearly to a supplier.
Width is measured across the flat tape and is normally expressed in millimetres. Standard widths for bag and luggage applications range from 15 mm to 50 mm, while narrow tapes for garment trims may be 10 mm or less. Width tolerance matters: for most woven webbing a tolerance of plus or minus 1 mm is normal, and tighter tolerances should be agreed before production because they affect both cost and delivery time.
Thickness is measured with a gauge under light pressure and is usually between 0.8 mm and 2.5 mm for standard webbing. A thicker tape generally feels firmer and holds its shape better, which is useful for handles and straps. A thinner tape is softer and more suitable for applications where flexibility matters, such as adjustable straps on garments. Thickness and width should always be specified together, because the same width can be produced at different weights.
Tensile strength describes how much pulling force a tape can withstand before breaking and is normally reported in kilograms or newtons. It depends mainly on the yarn type, the number of warp ends and the weave density. For safety-related applications such as backpack straps, pet leashes, harnesses and lifting accessories, buyers should always state the required breaking strength and ask for a test report rather than relying on the appearance of the tape alone.
Finally, buyers should confirm the finishing requirements. This may include the dyeing method and colour fastness, hot cutting or ultrasonic cutting to prevent fraying, surface treatments such as embossing or waterproofing, and the way the tape will be packed and rolled. Supplying a physical sample or a detailed specification sheet avoids misunderstanding and makes quotations comparable between suppliers.
